Fluoride Myths

While most people have heard of fluoride, they are unsure what it is. Dentists advocate fluoride treatments or fluoride toothpaste for strong, healthy teeth; here are some common misconceptions, myths, and facts about it.

Myth: Fluoride Damages Teeth

Cavities are significantly more destructive to teeth than fluorosis; thus, fluoride benefits exceed the danger of fluorosis. Fluoride is known as “nature’s cavity fighter” by the American Dental Association due to its ability to strengthen enamel and even reverse early signs of tooth decay.

Myth: People Who Drink Fluoridated Water Will Develop Fluorosis

Fluorosis occurs when a person consumes excessive levels of fluoride. The amount of fluoride added to drinking water in the United States is at a level associated with a very low risk of fluorosis.

Myth: Fluoride Is Dangerous for Kids

When used as directed, fluoride poses no risk to children. Drinking fluoridated water and using fluoride treatments recommended by your dentist strengthen teeth while they grow and can also help prevent future tooth decay and loss.

Myth: Fluoride Can Cause Allergies

Another misconception about fluoride is that it can induce or exacerbate allergies. This is false because fluoride is present in most areas’ water and many foods. If fluoride caused allergies, the number of people with allergies would be far higher.

Myth: Fluoride Leads to Cancer

Fluoridated water does not increase cancer risk or other health concerns, including kidney disease, diabetes, or heart disease, according to studies. Furthermore, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians have declared fluoridated water safe.
