Early Orthodontics for Children
Early interceptive orthodontics is intended to detect and proactively correct issues with the jaw, spacing, crowding, and tongue thrust. Early orthodontic treatments are broken up into two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2. Children between the ages of 6 and 10 should visit a Smile Every Day location for an exam to determine whether they can benefit from an early interceptive treatment before any issues become more costly or reach the point where surgery is needed.
Braces for Kids in Plantation
As a child, dental braces can seem like an intimidating procedure. At Smile Every Day Plantation Orthodontics, we understand that every child has unique needs and offer several custom treatment options and payment plans for braces ranging from classic metal braces to more subtle and natural-looking ceramic braces that straighten teeth over the course of several months or years.
Traditional metal braces remain very popular today, offering a reliable, effective and economical treatment option. Modern braces are smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to wear than the bulkier options from the past. You can even choose colorful elastics for the brackets or other modifications for a more personalized and fun look. Metal braces straighten your teeth using high-grade stainless-steel metal brackets and archwires.
Ceramic or “tooth-colored” braces are made of composite, clear materials. They are strong, natural-looking, and do not stain. Teenagers and adults usually prefer ceramic braces because they are less noticeable than metal braces. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as they are larger and more brittle than metal. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth. They are commonly more expensive than metal braces but for many, the cosmetic advantages outweigh the costs.
The Inman Aligner has achieved remarkable results in a much shorter period than other more conventional removable dental appliances. With an average 12-week turnaround time to successfully straighten front teeth, the Inman Aligner is also minimally invasive, utilizing coiled springs to apply pressure on the teeth and directing them into the desired position. Last, but not least, the Inman Aligner is also affordable, and more cost-effective than other invisible braces or veneers. That being said, not everyone is a candidate for this appliance.
Invisalign is a popular teeth straightening treatment that uses custom clear aligners to reposition and straighten teeth over time. They are are invisible and custom-molded to the individual teeth of every patient. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of clear aligners approximately every two weeks until your treatment is complete. By the end of the process, you’ll have that beautiful smile of your dreams!
Your Child’s First Visit
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Dental Association (ADA), and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommend scheduling an exam at the first eruption of baby teeth. The goal of this visit is to determine a primary provider and ongoing oral health plan. Once we establish a primary doctor and appointment schedule for your little one, you’ll know when and where to take them. To speed up the first appointment, you can download and complete our intake form prior to arriving.
We invite you to stay with your child throughout every step. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment to complete any necessary paperwork and give your child some time to adjust to the office. We will gather the necessary information to develop a preventative program unique to your child. We will discuss appropriate home care such as brushing, flossing, diet, and fluoride treatments. Dr. Mo and Dr. Steve will perform a thorough dental exam for each child, determine their dental caries risk, check for any tooth decay, examine their occlusion (bite), evaluate for any dental growth or developmental concerns, and discuss any oral habits such as the thumb-sucking or pacifier use.
Dr. Mo and Dr. Steve will recommend dental x-rays only if necessary. We will determine, during the first visit, if your child is ready for a dental cleaning and fluoride treatment. This typically depends on your child’s age and level of anxiety. For infants and toddlers we typically perform a “knee-to-knee” exam. For this exam, a child sits on your lap and leans back onto a soft pillow resting on the doctor’s knees to complete the examination. This allows parent participation for the exam and added comfort for your child. If Doctors Mo and Steve determine your child needs dental treatment, they will discuss all the options offered in our office and help you make the best choice for your child.
We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination and each visit after. This gives you the opportunity to see our team in action and allows the doctors to discuss dental findings and treatment needs directly with you. Our purpose is to gain your child’s confidence along with your trust.
Don’t be discouraged if your child cries on the first visit. Crying is a normal reaction for some children when faced with a new situation. It is important to make them feel reassured and positive about their dental experience. The more positive we make the visit, the more they will want to come back! If you get home and realize there was something you forgot, don’t hesitate to call our office. We realize the first appointment can be overwhelming and want to answer all of your questions.
