How To Select the Perfect Toothbrush

While it may seem simple, picking the right toothbrush is crucial in maintaining optimal oral health. There are many factors that should be considered when going through the selection process, including the bristle strength, head size, and shape of the toothbrush. Ideally, you should also look for toothbrushes that the American Dental Association approves.

Bristle Strength

Toothbrushes are made in three different types of bristle strength; soft, medium, and hard. These types are available for both electric and manual brushes. Brushes with soft bristles are the recommended type as they help prevent damage to the teeth. Medium and hard bristles can wear down the teeth’ enamel surface and damage your gums.

Brush Head Size

The size of the toothbrush’s head is essential to consider as it can affect the quality of your brushing experience. Ideally, your brush’s head should be one inch tall and half an inch wide, allowing for adequately cleaning the teeth back, front, and top. While larger brushes exist, they are not recommended as they make it difficult to reach the teeth located further into our mouths, like our molars.

ADA Approval

It’s usually a good idea to buy an ADA-approved toothbrush. This signifies that your toothbrush has undergone extensive testing to ensure that it cleans and protects your mouth effectively. If you’re not sure which brush to use, consult one of our Plantation dentists or Tamarac dentists. When you’re on the market for a new toothbrush, seek one that has the ADA Seal of Approval.

Using the correct toothbrush and practicing good oral hygiene at home is vital to ensure your dental and overall health for years to come. Visiting your dentist for a tooth cleaning twice a year is also recommended. Ask your dentist about the best toothbrush for you during your next oral exam
