Brushing Teeth Techniques

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled brush for a healthy mouth and smile. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth and reach all the areas effortlessly. You can use these standard brushing methods to ensure your teeth are cleaned thoroughly.

The Bass/Sulcular Method

The Bass Method involves utilizing the bristles of your toothbrush to remove plaque known as biofilm before it becomes gingivitis or causes tooth decay. The Bass Method is a highly effective method for healthy teeth and gums.

Technique

Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line. Add slight pressure and vibratory motions to ensure the brush strands go slightly beneath the gum line, which maximizes the extraction and removal of bacteria.

The Stillman Method

The Stillman Method is similar to the Bass Method. However, instead of circles, you use quick horizontal back-and-forth strokes on all surfaces of the teeth.

Technique

Angle the bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line. The bristles should be half on the gums and half on the tooth’s surface. The plaque is removed above the gum line by making short, light horizontal movements. The motion helps remove plaque, stimulate the gums, and effectively targets the teeth.

The Charter Method

The Charter Method is ideal if you have gaps between your teeth, receding gums, exposed roots, or have had periodontal surgery. This approach is also effective if you have orthodontic appliances, fixed partial dentures, or braces.

Technique

Position your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to remove plaque from the brackets and archwire. Then, change direction so the bristles remove plaque below them. This will ensure all plaque is removed from the surfaces of the braces.
