Proper oral hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Several problems can affect the health of your mouth, but if you take good care of your teeth and gums, you have the best chance of preserving a beautiful smile and long-lasting oral health.
Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
Dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice daily, once in the morning and once before bed. Brush your teeth for two minutes, including the backs and the fronts. Only use brushes with soft bristles to avoid damaging your gums.
Brush Properly
Brushing your teeth incorrectly is almost as bad as not brushing them at all. Take your time; move the toothbrush in gentle, circular strokes to remove plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, accumulating bacteria and leading to gingivitis (early gum disease).
Don’t Forget your Tongue
Plaque can also accumulate on your tongue. Not only can this cause bad breath, but it can also lead to oral health issues. Clean your tongue gently every time you brush your teeth.
Floss Daily
Flossing can help remove food particles and other harmful substances that brushing alone cannot remove. It also allows you to clean deep between the teeth, which a toothbrush or mouthwash cannot. That is why we recommend flossing at least once a day.
Drink More Water
Water is the most beneficial beverage for your body and oral health. In addition, as a rule, we recommend drinking water after each meal. This can assist in washing away some of the adverse effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes.
Limit Sugary & Acidic Food
Sugar eventually turns into acid in the mouth, which can destroy the enamel of your teeth. Acidic fruits, drinks, and coffee can also cause enamel erosion. While you cannot avoid such meals entirely, it never hurts to cut down on them.
Schedule A Dental Check-Up
Early detection of teeth or gum problems will make them easier to treat. If it is not addressed, they might cause damage that is difficult, if not impossible, to fix. Book an appointment with our Davie, Tamarac, or Plantation dentists today to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
