Is Fluoride Safe for Children & Babies?

For decades, fluoride has been a staple in oral health care. Toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitening kits and tons of other dental products contain fluoride. Despite widespread use, many parents still have concerns about whether fluoride is actually safe for children, especially newborns and young babies.

What Is Fluoride?

It is important to understand that fluoride is not a chemical but is actually a mineral. It has been proven to reduce the development of cavities by up to 25%. It does so by strengthening the enamel of the teeth, making it more difficult for sugars and acids to penetrate the pulp. Regardless of age, fluoride is absolutely safe for regular use in children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends rubbing a light amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily on a child’s teeth as soon as they emerge and continuing this until age 3. Once they hit 3, it is recommended that you start applying a dab the size of a pea. Children also consume fluoride in the city water at school, home, restaurants, and other public places.

Fluoride Side Effects

A nursing baby will receive adequate fluoride from breast milk or formula. If the formula is mixed with fluoridated water, fluorosis may occur. This is a condition in which white streaks may be visible on the teeth, most likely during a dental checkup. It is not dangerous, but you can discuss it with your provider. You can mix formula with bottled, non-fluoridated water to prevent this from happening.
