What Are Canker Sores?

Canker sores are very common, often minor irritations that occur in any of the mouth’s soft tissues, including the inside of your cheeks, lips, gums, tongue, and roof of the mouth. These sores affect many people throughout their lives and are caused by various factors. Let’s discuss some of the causes of canker sores and what you can do to improve and prevent them.

Causes of Canker Sores

While the exact cause of canker sores still remains unclear, researchers suggest that several factors, including a family history of canker sores, can increase the risk of developing them. Some of these factors include:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Minor mouth injury
  • Biting
  • Viral Infections
  • Allergies

A canker sore is generally diagnosed by having your dentist examine it. If you have a severe breakout or they suspect you have a virus, hormonal disorder, or immune system problem, they may order blood tests or a biopsy of the affected area.

Treatment

Oftentimes, canker sores do not require any form of treatment as they tend to heal themselves over time. You could try gargling salt water or mouthwash if they feel slightly painful. While uncomfortable at first, it can help reduce the pain. You could also look for over-the-counter medications such as benzocaine or hydrogen peroxide rinses to alleviate the discomfort.

Prevention Tips

  • Dietary Changes

Avoid foods that may have previously prompted an eruption of canker sores to avoid a recurrence. Spicy, salty, and acidic dishes are common examples. Also, stay away from foods that trigger allergy symptoms like itchy lips, swollen tongue, or hives.

  • Oral Hygiene Habits

After meals, brushing your teeth and flossing once a day will help keep your mouth clean and clear of foods that can cause a sore. Brush your teeth gently to avoid irritating your mouth’s fragile tissues.

  • Seek Medical Advice

Visit your Plantation dentists, Tamarac dentists, or Davie dentists for an oral exam and talk with them to determine if there could be more serious underlying issues causing your canker sores, such as vitamin deficiencies or immune system conditions.
