What Is a Porcelain Crown

It is no secret that we all desire to have the perfect smile. Unfortunately, our teeth can become damaged over the years, affecting their look and functionality. Thanks to advancements in dental technology, many options are available to help fix some of these issues and improve your health and appearance.

Dental Crowns 101

A dental crown is a prosthetic cap that is placed over a broken or damaged tooth in order to restore its appearance and function. These are made from a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain, or a combination of both. Porcelain crowns are one type of dental crown, and because of their translucent tint, they are regarded as one of the most aesthetically beautiful types of dental crowns.

How Do They Work

Crowns are created by taking imprints of your tooth or teeth and sending them to the lab to be made. Oftentimes, a patient is given a temporary crown to wear while we wait for the lab’s permanent crown. Once we receive the crown, the damaged tooth is cleaned and prepped for implantation. Sometimes, radiographs or bite-wing x-rays are used to diagnose and determine the proper fit of dental crowns.

Porcelain Crown Aftercare

While porcelain crowns and other types of dental crowns are impervious to cavities, you must still take excellent care of your improved teeth, including brushing and flossing on a regular basis, the same way you care for your other natural teeth. It is important to note that porcelain crowns can still become damaged and stained. If you do not exercise basic dental hygiene, you can still develop cavities and tooth decay below a crown.
